Oil filter
I had a Wolseley hornet before and I had the same problem. So I changed the whole filter assembly for the later Mini type. You need to change the studs for later type as well, gasket etc. Best thing I ever did though. Regards, Fergal.

oil filter conversion kit for an automatic 1300 mini
Recently changed the oil and catridge filter in my automatic mini and have a recurring oil leak problem. The car only has about 48K miles on the clock so its in relatively good condition otherwise. Basically as soon as the car warms up it starts dripping out of where bowl joins the housing. I've had a couple of attempts at this now both times replacing the seals, tightening the securing bolt further with the same results. I thought the best way to resolve this is to replace the current filter assembly with a conversion kit which allows for the use of a proper canister filter. With this in mind I bought an LPX10026 filter head for a 12A series engine which mine is. The trouble is that the LPX10026 filter head had has an oil return pipe at the top and can't tell where this should come from, As far as can see looking at my engine no such pipe is fitted to the old filter. Does anyone have any ideas or have I bought the wrong conversion kit ? i attach a picture of the current set up if this helps. Gabriel

Auto Oil filter probs
hi, after a thousand miles plus, my gfs minis oil filter decided to dump oil everywhere this morning. So got new filter and oil. But i cant get the thing to stop spitting out oil, even a few washers at the bolt head top of the can to push it tighter to the engine - I fitted it last time (i dont think all the washers and such that should be there are, but its worked great up till now) ...any ideas or should i just re-assemble it TIA

Oil/Filter
I use Duckhams Q 20/50 oil, and a GFE443 Unipart filter - all changed every 3-4000 miles. Matt.

First of all Giuseppe, is your Mini fuel injected? If it is then yes that is the correct type air filter.
But I know that the British Open Classic LE Mini we got in the UK was an earlier 1992 version and had a HIF38 Carburettor.
So if you have a Carburettor instead then you need part number: -
Description this air filter originated on the Metro range but was used from 1990 on any minis fitted with a HIF type SU carbs that have the integral float bowl in its base
And the oil filter you need is GFE166 unless your Mini has a Twin-Point/MPi engine fitted?
And use "Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50" oil because it's good for both the engine and gearbox and "NGK BPR6ES" Spark Plugs are superb too!

Thanks for fast answer Is a mini of 1996 so no carburator but inejcton, the problem is this:i dont know if is spi or mpi,is important? So air filter is ok im still confused for oil filter..

If it's a Twin-Point/MPi engine, then the radiator will be positioned up front, just behind the grille.
But if your radiator is in the usual place like on most other Minis, which is on the right of the engine instead then it's probably an SPi Mini and you want a "GFE166" or equivalent type of Oil Filter then.

automatics have an eliment type filter in a casing rather than standard disposible canister type. never changed one tho on an auto but most likily its that.

Yes you're perfectly correct as you have an automatic Mini and that's how the oil filter should sit. Lubricate the seal on the new oil filter with some fresh engine oil prior to fitting it.
Later post 1996 (Twin-Point/MPi) Minis all had the oil filter fitted that way.

When we bought ours, it was spraying oil all round the engine compartment, and emitting loads of smoke, because the central bolt had been tightened so much that the convex top of the cannister was now concave, and the cannister could never be made tight.
From memory, it looked something like this:- http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=34979
I don't know if it is possible or easier to 'upgrade' to a standard cartridge oil filter?

It's not possible to convert to a screw fitting, I'm afraid.
I managed to get one from someone in Brimingham - although he said it was one of the last he had in stock.
Same issue with overtightening creating a concave end - you _might_ be able to get someone to rebend that out, and then use a good washer on the end to seal it, but it's a long shot.

Spin on oil filter conversion for Automatic?
I've got a 1996 Rover 1.3 Automatic and I've read a lot of conflicting information about whether or not a spin on oil filter conversion kit can be bought/fitted to an automatic.
I've been having a lot of oil leaking problems lately and the garage I use said I should look into this, but I thought it was odd that almost no sites seem to sell the kits let alone have any information regarding them.
Cheers anyway.

I can't help you a great deal, but it seems to me you need to answer two questions: (1) can you fit a standard spin-on head to your engine block? (2) if so, can you find a bigger oil filter that will fit it?
If the answer to (1) is yes (and I can't believe the block on the automatics is any different from manuals) then all you need to do is buy a new head, take it down to your local auto-parts shop and ask them to find a large filter that will fit (you'll need to make sure it's not so wide that it won't clear the side of the engine/gearbox when the head is fitted, of course).
Let us know how you get on!
